Edmonton has a new hot spot for eats and entertainment with the opening of the nation’s first “The Rec Room” at South Edmonton Common. Its doors officially opened for dinner on Sept. 19. The company says the two-level, 60,000-square-foot complex has “raised the bar” for entertainment in Canada.
Located at 1725 99th Street NW, The Rec Room has half its space devoted to dining and live entertainment while the other offers amusement games and similar attractions. Owners hope The Rec Room is a destination that will attract a wide demographic of Millennials and baby boomers with kids, as well as large groups.
Food is first at The Rec Room, with wood-fired, Canadian-inspired cuisine available across several eateries within the establishment. Three10 is an upscale casual restaurant, The Loft offers fun and fast pizza and finally The Shed gives attendees the chance to try poutine (a Canadian classic) with elevated toppings like porchetta, brisket, lobster and wild mushrooms. On top of this all, there are multiple bars throughout the establishment and over 10 private dining rooms accommodating groups of up to 250 people.
In The Yard, guests get the chance to play over 100 games with their credits and tickets tracked on RFID bracelets. A leaderboard gives guests the chance to win bragging rights while The Rec Room’s redemption counter keeps people playing for the chance to win prizes. If it wasn’t “Canadian” enough, guests can try axe throwing as one of the feature attractions of The Rec Room, which also offers more traditional bowling, billiards, air hockey and ping pong.
Cineplex plans to open 10-15 The Rec Room locations over the next few years across Canada and has already announced locations in Toronto and Calgary which will open in 2017. For information and hours of operation, please visit TheRecRoom.com.
